The Down East Seniors Club held their Wednesday, Oct. 12 meeting at the Blind Center of NC in Washington. President Roy Whichard led the meeting. Jim Hackney played for the singing of “God Bless America” and the group pledged allegiance to the flag. Phil Ryals gave the opening
prayer and Hackney provided factoids for the date in history.
Charles Smith introduced Jeff Jenkins as the speaker. Jeff is the son
of former East Carolina College president Leo Jenkins. Jeff told about
his memoir which he wrote for his grandchildren and which has been
published in a book titled “Easy Street”. At the time he was born in
Greenville his father was the Dean of Men at ECC. When Jeff was about
11 his father became the college president and, as a result, the
family moved to the college president’s residence on Fifth Street in
Greenville. Initially Jeff didn’t like moving away from his
neighborhood friends, but later he accepted it. He and his five
siblings were as mischievous as any group of young people. He told a
number of stories about the pranks they pulled. His first job was with
Belk Tyler; later he moved on to business consulting.

Next week’s speaker will be Pastor Allen Adkins with the Salvation Army.
The Down East Seniors Club is a group of older men in the Washington
area who meet for fellowship and an interesting program Wednesdays
from 10-11 a.m. and make contributions to local charities.
