Mr. Samuel Brooks, age 82, of Chocowinity, NC, departed this life peacefully at his home on February 23, 2023. Samuel was born in Saluda, SC on August 6, 1940, to the late Eloise and Samuel Brooks. He moved to New York City at an early age with his family. He attended New York City Public Schools and graduated high school from Charles Evans Hughes High in 1958. Samuel furthered his education at The Bernard M. Baruch College, New York, NY, receiving a bachelor’s degree in business administration and he later earned a Master’s in Business Administration from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC.

Samuel had a successful career with the United States Postal Service, which spanned over several decades. He began his postal career as a city carrier in Washington, NC and served as postmaster for Chocowinity Post Office from 1983- until retirement in 2000.  He also worked as a licensed Insurance Agent, licensed Real Estate agent, Computer Instructor at Beaufort County Community College and Substitute Teacher for Beaufort County Schools.

He was an active member in his community. He served as a member of Toastmasters, Jaycees, Hiram Lodge #11, Jeptha Chapter #1 OES, and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. Samuel was a member of Maple Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as the church photographer and videographer.

He is preceded in death by a brother: Leo Brooks.

Leaving to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Lorena H. Brooks of the home, 5 children: Cynthia Harper (Ray) of Charlotte, NC, Kayla Haywood of the home, Deidre Haywood of Greensboro, NC, Bryan Haywood (LeSharo) of Wilson, NC and Trisha Haywood of Raleigh, NC; 3 grandchildren: Chance, Ashley, and Damien; 2 sisters, Leova Jenkins and Sharon Brooks both of New York, NY and 1 brother, Bennie Brooks of Palm Coast, Florida;a mother-in-law, Queen Esther Haywood of the home,  1 sister-in-law: Lola Blango (Marshall); 2 brothers-in-law: Edward Harvey and Rayvon Haywood (Essie), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Professional and caring service has been entrusted to: Leon Randolph Funeral Home, 208 W. MLK Jr. Dr., of Washington, North Carolina.
