PCA update: girls soccer leads the conference

Tuesday the Pungo Christian Academy girls soccer team traveled to Ridgecroft School for their first conference opener. Brooklyn Bowes started the scoring after receiving a perfect pass from Katie Baxter, who would make it 2 – 0 midway through the first period. Bowes added a second goal to make it 3 – 0 at halftime after she scored off Julia Rouses shot being deflected. In the second half, Baxter would find the back of the net again, this time from midfield that caught the Ram keeper out of position. Ridgecroft scored on a PK with 15 minutes left, then scored again just minutes later to make set the final at 4 – 2.

The Raiders golf team finished third behind Northeast Academy and Ridgecroft School in the match at Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie. Sam Warren led PCA and finished fourth overall with a 43. Davis Lee shot a 47, Jay Askew shot a 50 and Cooper Evans rounded out the scoring with a 55.

Thursday the Lady Raiders softball team took down the Teach Trailblazers 10 – 0 in five innings. Melanie Rutledge went 2-2 with her second home run of the year. Reagan Stoop went 3 – 3 with a triple and two doubles. Ginny Pugh and Lily Keech each went 2 – 2. Emma Hanna, Reese Blackmon and Allison Sawyer each recorded a hit for the Raiders. Reagan Stoop struck out seven in four innings pitched, then Anna Stoop struck out two batters in the final inning.

In the baseball game the Trailblazers got the best of the Raiders with a 9 – 2 victory, ending Pugno’s three game winning streak. Bo Spencer, Austin Garrish, McKinney Waters, Wells Eagles and Evan Woolard had hits for the Raiders. Spencer took the pitching loss after allowing six runs (two earned) with seven strikeouts. Woolard shut out the Trailblazer for 1.2 innings and Jackson Walker finished the final inning and a third.

The girls soccer team rolled over Lawrence Academy, 7 – 1. Baxter scored the first goal five minutes into the first half. Brooklyn Bowes (2), Julia Rouse,  Reagan Walker and Mia Paniagua scored in the first half, giving the Raiders a 6 – 1 advantage. Sayla Brown added a goal of her own to round out the scoring. Baxter and Rouse each had two assists. PCA is 2 – 0 in conference and currently sits in first place.

On Friday the softball team squared off with Cape Fear Christian in a rematch of last year’s state championship series. Abbey Cutler drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third to get things started for the Raiders. Emma Hanna reached on a bunt and Reagan Stoop plated both runners with a double to left center. Melanie Rutledge drove in Stoop with another double and Ella Kate Hanna would hit a third consecutive RBI double for a 4 – 0 lead. The Eagles answered with a run in the top of the 5th, but PCA scored two more runs to extend their lead to 6 – 1. Stoop closed things out on the mound to give the Raiders theirsixth consecutive win. Stoop gave up six hits, no walks and struck out 12 across 7 innings.

The baseball team got back to their winning ways Friday with an 11 – 9 win over Crossroads Christian. Jay Askew led the way at the plate, going 3 – 4 with two doubles. Parker Byrd added three hits with a double while Wells Eagles added two hits with a double and Evan Woolard added two singles. Conner Sweet (1/3), Bo Spencer (1/4, RBI), McKinney Waters (1/4), Carr Eagles (1/1, RBI), and Jackson Walker (1/4) all added hits. Evan Woolard picked up the pitching win, going 4 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits and 9 strikeouts. Jackson Walker came on in relief and struck out five before Austin Garrish forced a ground out to end the game.

The Raiders baseball team will open conference play this week against Northeast Academy. Softball will have to wait another week to get into conference play, but traveled to Arendell Parrott Academy Tuesday in their lone game of the week. Girls soccer traveled to Albemarle School Tuesday and hosts Northside Thursday. The golf team hosts this week’s conference match at Washington Yacht and Country Club.
