Raiders close out regular season

Tuesday was a busy day at PCA as soccer and softball hosted senior night games while golf traveled to Lasker for the TIC tournament.

Senior Ashley Williford’s fifth inning home run broke a scoreless tie and put the Lady Raiders ahead, 3-0 against Rocky Mount Academy. PCA added three more runs in the sixth for a 6-0 victory.  Williford led Pungo with three RBI. Emma Hanna, Melanie Rutledge and Ginny Pugh all added hits and Pugh added an RBI. Reagan Stoop picked up the pitching win with a three hitter and eight strikeouts in her final regular season appearance in a Raider uniform.

On the pitch, PCA scored four goals in each half to shut out the Albemarle Colts, 8 – 0. Julia Rouse notched her first hat trick of the season while adding two assist. Seniors Destiny Midgette and Bailey Cox added goals along with Katie Bowes and Katie Baxter. Goalie Autumn Gibbs saw her first field action and scored her first career goal midway through the second half. Ava Hayes Cox filled in for Gibbs in the second half and kept the shutout alive, saving the Colts only shot on goal.

On the golf course, senior Sam Warren shot a career best 76 to take 3rd place at the TIC Tournament at Valley Pine Country Club in Lasker. Davis Lee (88), Cooper Evan (94), Jay Askew (106) and Grand Gibbs (126) rounded out the scoring for the Raiders, who finished third in the conference. Warren also took home TIC All Conference honors.

Thursday, the baseball Raiders traveled to Ridgecroft School while soccer made the short trip to Terra Ceia to finish out each teams regular season.

On the diamond, PCA scored nine runs in the first two innings with six more in the fourth for a 15-0 victory.  Evan Woolard went 2 – 2 with an RBI. Parker Byrd went 1 – 3 with 2 RBI. Conner Sweet, Jay Askew, Bo Spencer, Austin Garrish and McKinney Waters all picked up hits in the win. Freshman Jackson Walker allowed one hit and fanned 10 in his first complete game shutout.

The soccer team defeated Terra Ceia 4 – 0 to go undefeated in conference play in just their second season of competition. Katie Baxter scored three goals in the first half and Brooklyn Bowes added one in the second. Julia Rouse assisted on one of Baxter’s goals. Autumn Gibbs picked up her 10th win in goal and sixth shutout.

Softball and baseball will compete in this week’s TIC Tournament held at Northeast Academy while PCA will host the soccer tournament. Softball tied with Lawrence Academy for first but won the coin flip to gain the top seed and automatic bye to Wednesdays championship game. Baseball earned the second seed and will play number three Northeast Academy. The soccer team is the top seed and plays fourth seeded Lawrence Academy Thursday

All three teams appear to be top four seeds in next week’s NCISAA state tournament, with brackets being posted on Sunday afternoon.
