Northside girls golf place ninth at 1-A state final

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Northside’s golf team finished ninth overall Tuesday after completing for the first time in the two-day NC High School Athletic Association Class 1-A state championship, played at Sapona Golf Club in Lexington.

The Panthers finished with a two-day score of 599, the best of any team east of Raleigh. The foursome of Sophie Berry, Claire Holmes, Riley Hudson and Samantha Braddy had a second-day score of 294 after carding a 305 on Monday, which had the team in 10th place.

“Northside women’s golf finalized with a 1A/2A state championship appearance in Lexington NC,” Northside coach Jared Adams said. “There are currently 109 1A and 2A high schools in NC. Only 13 qualified for the state championship and Northside women’s golf placed 9th overall. For a first-year program, I am proud of their accomplishments and personal drive to improve throughout the season.”

Berry, who was tied for 29th after the first day with a 93, finished tied for 27th with a 186. She had a 93 on Tuesday.

Holmes had a 100 on the first day and was tied for 52nd. On Tuesday, she carded a 91 to finish tied for 33rd with a 191.

Hudson finished Tuesday with a 110 after shooting a 112 for a two-day score of 222. Braddy had a 116 on the second day after carding a 118 on the first day. She finished with a total score of 234.

Pine Lake Prep won the Class 1-A title by 19 strokes. Sophomore Paisley Freda, finished in fourth place after a pair of 81s. Avery County finished in second place, three shots ahead of East Rutherford while East Surry and West Lincoln completed the top five. Second place through fifth place were separated by six strokes. 

Jackson Day School’s Landry Hamm earned the school’s first NCHSAA championship in any sport as she posted a 157, three shots clear of Avery County’s Sydney Kulhan.

Defending champion Malerie Lague of Christ the King finished in third place, four shots off the pace.
