YEATESVILLE, N.C. — The Northside boys basketball team jumped to a quick lead in Wednesday’s game with Camden County. However, it was the Bruins who adjusted, got the Panthers into foul trouble and came away with a 59-44 victory.
The loss was the first of the season for the Panthers (4-1) who were unbeaten after a 68-25 win over Mattamuskeet on Tuesday.
The Panthers scored the game’s first 11 points before Camden began its rally, hitting a 3-pointer with 1:28 left in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 11-9.
“That’s a quality basketball team,” Northside coach Jared Adams said. “They hadn’t been shooting well, and tonight they shot the lights out. They hit a lot of shots when they counted.
“We started out on an 11-0 run in the first quarter. And then we made two passes in transition that was just right to a defender. So it gave them a little life.”
Camden (4-1) hit four straight 3-pointers as part of a 14-2 run ito turn a 19-14 deficit with 4:27 left in the first half into a 28-21 lead with 44 seconds left in the half. On the other side, Northside was dealing with foul trouble that forced head coach Jared Adams to play with two of his starters on the bench — Nick Moore and Zi’mier Alexander — during that stretch.
The Panthers got as close as 34-31 after a putback by Nick Moore with 5:09 left in the third. Camden outscored Northside 21-2 after that to lead 52-35 going into the fourth quarter.
“We’re a quality team. There’s some things we’ve got to work on,” Adams said. “That was a good match tonight, helping prepare us for the rest of our season as well as conference play.”
Max Vansant led Northside with 13 points while Alexander had 10. Xzavior Wiggins led Camden with 24 points.
Moore had 17 points and Malachi Moore added 15 for Northside in the win over Mattamuskeet. The Panthers led 24-4 after the first quarter and outscored the Lakers 18-4 in the third quarter to lead 56-20.
Northside’s girls now 6-0 after win
Northside’s girls did a much better job at the free throw line and played aggressive defense again to beat Camden County, 49-23 on Wednesday to stay unbeaten.
Northside had its struggles last Friday before pulling away for a 76-61 win over TEACH in the championship game of the Northside Basketball Kickoff Tournament. In that game, the Panthers were 20 for 37 from the free-throw line. Panthers coach Michelle Leathers said her team would work to improve in that area while playing better defense.
The Panthers responded with a 53-15 win Tuesday over Mattamuskeet, shooting 7 of 15 from the line, and were 13 of 23 from the line overall, 12 for 18 in the first half, against Camden.
“Really, we just really look for the open guards, because coach … she tells us we’ve got to push the ball every single time,” Northside’s Tatianna Moore said. “We cannot slow the ball down. That’s one thing that she tells us.”
OJ Cahoon had 21 points while Tatianna Moore had 14 points for Northside, including 8 of 9 from the free throw line in the first half.
“She’s really tough on defense,” Moore said about her coach. “That’s one thing that she’s really focused on is defense. If the layup’s there, then we can get on the free throws.
“If we miss our free throws, we’ve got to run. So we really try not to miss the free throws.”
Cahoon had 16 points and Madison Scheffler added 10 for Northside in the win over Mattamuskeet.
