A lot of Pam Pack players have passed on, but there are two I’d like to see playing again, Doc Smith and Jimmy Hill!
Starting with Doc Smith since he came from Chocowinity. He was a good looking guy and married a former Miss Georgia. He later signed a scholarship to play football with East Carolina University. Coach Wagner cared for him like he was one of his own.
Otha Smith never missed a game that he played in. Otha and Delma Smith were his two older brothers and Delma might have missed a game but Otha never did! Later after college he was one of Leon Brogden’s assistants .Together they coached many great players. Do the names Sonny Jorgensen and Roman Gabriel sound familiar? Both played in the NFL and both played for Coach Doc Smith.
He has a son who is a dentist in Macon , GA. He never got to meet his son because he died of cancer before he was born.
Jimmy Hill was a great one. Had a lot of the same virtues that Doc possessed. I got to know Jimmy and his lovely wife, Nancy, growing up at the river. He attended the same prep school, Randolph Macon Academy that I played for. He has two lovely daughters, Inda and Susan Hill. I have grown up with these girls and their mother lives next to me now. My mom used to tell me how close she and Nancy were. The late Jimmy Hill was a running back for Coach Wagner and he wore the blue and white . I hear he was a good one and how I would like to see him play.
The long blue and white line goes back through the generations and I enjoy hearing all about it.
They were the best of times with the best of friends and the best of places, Washington N. C. The Original Washington!
