Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Blessed are my mom and dad for choosing the corner of Telfair and Tenth for me to be raised. I had neighbors like Mrs. Sallie and Uncle Bonnie to help me grow up to become the man that I am today. There are others who helped. Besides Mickey and Steve Cochran, there was a special soon to be lawyer I want to write about, his name is Herman Gaskins.
Herman started the advertisement business for all lawyers . He started out after getting his undergraduate degree then getting his law degree . I do not know how many people he may have touched, but I know one person that he’s definitely touched. Me.
He was a year behind me in high school and each day he became a more solid football player for Coach Wagner. He was rock solid because of living beside Mickey and Steve Cochran. They taught him all the fundamentals of football and incorporated some knowledge of weight training. Perfect combination.
He started out as an undergraduate and soon he married Debra. She is also a lawyer. He has two boys and one has started a business in Greenville. That’s where he got Gaskins and Gaskins from and Earl is his grandson. I admire him for that, making his grandson part of his business.
There are many tv commercials today for lawyers. But I think Herman was one of the first ever to advertise this way. He’s always worked hard and that’s all he knows! . He covers the state of North Carolina with his practice.
We all grew up on Tenth Street -Steve Shepherd, Keith Roach, E. J. Jarvis, Gaye Harris, Warren Everett, Herman, Tomp Litchfield and the late Bill Litchfield. And do not forget our Algebra teacher, Mrs. Godley!
They were the best of times with the best friends and in the places Washington, N. C. The Original Washington!
