The space at 156 W Main Street next to the Historic Turnage Theater has played several versions of the same role. It’s been a restaurant space since Roger Meyland purchased it in the 1990s; however, its roles have included an all-American eatery as Grub Brothers to trendy Mediterranean spot Pia’s. This spring, it will take on its next role as The Stubborn Mule Raw Bar and Grill.

Roger and Joan Meyland are transforming 156 W. Main Street into a casual, coastal fair that offers raw oysters and steaks but stays true to their classics like Possum in the Trash (nachos covered in pulled pork barbecue, queso, pico de gallo and jalapeños).

At night, however, customers can expect a different atmosphere with linen tablecloths and napkins.

The Meylands are looking to be “different than everyone else,” Joan said in explaining why they are opening a raw bar downtown. Their original plan was to open a raw bar inside Grub Brothers; however, when they were ready to move forward, the covid pandemic and the busy-ness of running Grub Brothers and The Bank Bistro pushed the project back.

“We wanted to be unique. We want to serve our customers and tourists. We want our regulars. We want people to feel like they’ll be able to walk in casual dress, right off the boat,” Joan said.

The Meylands are aiming to have The Stubborn Mule up and running this March. The seasonal menu will feature “land and sea,” Joan said. Customers will be able to select from oysters, scallops, shrimp, crab legs, steak, chicken breast and pork chops and more.

For 12 years, 156 W Main St. has donned red and black decor as part of its role as Grub Brothers, but for The Stubborn Mule, it will wear relaxing coastal colors both in the downstairs and soon to open upstairs dining areas.

A big change from Grub Brothers will be the hours at The Stubborn Mule which will be open Wednesday through Sunday (hours are to be determined). This is different, because Grub Brothers used to be the only restaurant downtown open seven days a week. Being closed on Monday and Tuesday will give the Meylands time to take care of administrative tasks, orders and time to train staff, Joan said.

The Stubborn Mule is the fourth restaurant Roger and Joan have owned together. They have owned The Rumor Mill Cafe, Grub Brothers and they currently own The Bank Bistro.
