Washington’s Woolard wins 50-meter free consolation race, 5th in 100 free

CARY, N.C. — Washington High School junior Aubrey Woolard won the consolation final in the women’s 50-yard freestyle and placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in the Class 1A/2A state swimming championships on Saturday.

Woolard had a finals time of 25.52 in the 50-yard freestyle consolation final. She just beat out East Carteret’s Maggie Murray for the top spot. Murray’s time was 25.64.

The top eight finishers in the preliminary race went on to the championship final. Makenzie Hollingsworth of Highland School of Technology had a preliminary time of 25.44 to place eighth. Murray was 10th in 25.67 and Woolard was 11th in 25.69.

Alexander Tysinger of Burns won the gold medal in 23.36, a new state record in the event. Megan Becker of Uwharrie Charter was second (23.83) and Julia Sherrill of Brevard was third (24.23).

In the 100-meter freestyle, Woolard finished eighth in the preliminary race in 56.45 to make the final. She shaved nearly a second off her final time, coming in at 55.66, to finish fifth.

Tysinger won the race in 50.84, a new state record. Becker was second in 51.03 and Grace McCarthy of Pine Lake Preparatory was third in 53.45.
