Last Wednesday two of my teammates from Randolph Macon took me out to lunch. Tommy Tucker and John Simar drove all the way from Charlotte to come for a visit. John had never been down here before and he fell in love with Washington and its friendly people. I showed him all over town like you would anybody who’s never been here before. Tommy has been here many times to visit.
John and Jeanie Simar were staying with their daughter in Clayton, N. C.,. John decided to call Tommy up to see if he was up for a day trip to head to Washington. It was easier since Tommy knew the way down here.
John, who lives in Lynchburg,Va. was captain of the football team at RMA and married the coach’s daughter. He went to West Point after high school to play football. He stayed in active duty to coach football for four years and serves on the Athletic Committee at West Point now. He played three sports at RMA and excelled in all three. He is on the Board of Directors now at RMA.
Knowing Tommy Tucker has been a pleasure. Tommy lives with his wife Diane near Charlotte. He helped secure the first $100,000 toward the Harbor District Market when he served for 12 years in the State Senate. He was a defensive tackle on the football team at RMA and now he has a heating and sheet metal company in Charlotte and serves on the state utilities commission. He has been on numerous road trips with me back to RMA for many homecoming games. He is one of my wife’s favorite friends and loves to hunt quail. Tommy roomed with Mac Currin who lives in Washington but was on a trip to Australia that day.
Friends like these do not come around often so don’t miss an opportunity to say “I love you”. Because I do!
They were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places, Washington, N. C. The Original Washington.
