Pungo Christian Academy’s varsity basketball teams qualified for the Class 1A NC Independent Schools Athletic Association’s postseason.

Pungo’s boys (7-15) were at Friendship Christian in Raleigh on Tuesday. Both teams were at-large bids in the East Regional. The winner will play at No. 7 Ridgecroft School on Thursday.

Pungo’s girls (8-16) were the No. 7 seed and hosted Southeastern Christian (15-7) on Tuesday. The winner goes to Lawrence Academy on Friday for a second-round game.

Wrestling regionals this Friday, Saturday

Wrestlers from Washington, Northside and Southside will take part in their respective regionals this Friday and Saturday.

Wrestlers from Washington will compete at Ayden-Grifton High School, while Northside and Southside wrestlers will go to Rosewood High School.

The individual state championships will be Feb. 20-22 at First Horizon Coliseum, which is part of the Greensboro Complex.

Spring sports start practices Wednesday

Believe it or not, it’s time for spring sports on the high school ranks.

Baseball, softball, track, boys’ golf, boys’ tennis and girls’ soccer were allowed to hold their first practices and tryouts. In fact, some schools will be holding scrimmages this weekend.

The first official games can be played starting Feb. 24. However, some schools may push back schedules in some sports due to the state basketball playoffs stretching into March.
