It was certainly a night to remember for Washington High School senior Javon Williams.

He was part of a Senior Night ceremony where athletes, cheerleaders and members of the band were recognized. Williams was joined on the basketball court by his parents and the other seniors before the boys’ game was played.

Williams’ performance is a big reason the Pam Pack finished second in the Eastern Plains Conference after an 83-54 win over SouthWest Edgecombe and Thursday’s 88-57 win over Ayden-Grifton in the regular-season finale.

Williams talked about the 1,500-point milestone, what the season has been like and much more as the focus now turns to next week’s conference tournament.

1. What does Senior Night mean to you?

“I mean, it means a lot since I’ve been playing varsity for four years. It was just a good last game with all the boys.”

2. 1,500 plus points now. Talk about that. That’s quite an accomplishment.

“It means a lot to me. I couldn’t do it without my teammates. They follow the ball. Whenever I’m hot, they just give it to me. Yeah, it just means a lot to me. Glad to play with the guys.”

3. This team is really impressive because you can be down 14 points and then be up 28. I’ve seen you do it three, four, five times this year. Where’s the switch on the floor to do that? Is it a halftime adjustment?

I don’t think it’s a halftime adjustment. I think everybody just really wants to win. We lost the last three years in the second round of the state playoffs. Everybody’s just hungry this year to go all the way. The way we work in practice, straight defense. You don’t touch the ball during the first 30 minutes of practice. We just work.”

4. Tell me about this team. You’ve seen four years’ worth of success. You saw the disappointment from last year. What can this team do? How successful can this team do?

“I think this is the best team that I’ve been on since I’ve been here. We have guys that can play one through five, guard one through five. We have matchup nightmares.

You see, sometimes, four of us being double digits. People off the bench come in and are playing hard. It’s just hard to guard us.

5. So how do you adjust from here going forward?

Just keep working hard and practicing, playing hard in the games, really.”
