Washington’s wrestling team won the Class 2A East Regional and will send eight wrestlers to the state championships, which will begin later this week due to the threat of winter weather.

Northside finished 17th in the Class 1A East Regional, finishing with 38.5 points. Senior Ryland Paul qualified fourth in the regional at 144 pounds. Southside placed 21st with 17 points but did not qualify any individuals in the 1A state final.

The wrestling state championships were slated for Thursday-Saturday but were moved to Saturday-Monday at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Washington took first in the 2A East regional with 176 points, just beating out Eastern Plains Conference foe North Pitt (171 points). Pasquotank County (130.5) was third and host Ayden-Grifton (129) was fourth.

Sam Boltes (1st, 106 pounds) and Bryce Perry (1st, 126) each won their respective weight class. Gabe Foreman (2nd, 144), Evan Makepeace (2nd, 175), Tucker Massie (3rd, 132), Trenton Baldree (3rd, 190), Cooper Johnson (3rd, 285) and Andrew Foreman (4th, 120) also qualified for the state final.
