From St. Thomas Episcopal Church
In what is hoped to be the first of many annual celebrations of National Chili Day, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, in Bath, hosted ten chili chefs and over 100 chili eaters for a fun, spicy, variety filled dinner. Various types of chili, corn bread, and desserts were on hand. The chefs brought everything from traditional chili to vegetarian, Cincinnati-style to white bean chicken, and many flavors in between. All those in attendance were able to sample each of the ten chilis available, and then cast a vote for their favorite. The winning chef? Mrs. Maryann Adam of Bath, with her most delicious white chicken chili.
A Silent Auction was also held, with more than a dozen wonderful items that had been donated by members of the Bath community. These included catered dinners with a private chef, a weekend mountain get-a-way, art works, nature photography, and hand crafted knitted and crochet items.
The proceeds from this event will be used to purchase food supplies for one of St. Thomas’s on-going Outreach Ministries, its Back Pack Pals weekend food supplement program. In its 22nd year of operation, Back Pack Pals provides meals for 89 children at both the Bath Elementary and Northeast Elementary Schools, every weekend during the school year. Children are selected by the schools based on counselor and teacher assessments that they are experiencing food insecurity in the home.
The Back Pack Pals food ministry is just one way the congregation at St. Thomas expresses its love and concern for members of our community. As the oldest—and still active—church in North Carolina, St. Thomas would like the people within all of our surrounding communities to know that they are welcome to join us at worship every Sunday at 8 and 10 a.m., or on Wednesdays at 8 a.m.
