“Death comes for us all. Even at our birth, even at our birth it does stand aside a little, and muses to itself whether it will draw nigh that day or the next. It is the law of nature, and the will of God.”

Good heavens, man. Where are you going with this? It’s depressing.

You’re right, of course. I’m not really sure I’m going anywhere with it.

The source, as some of you may recognize, is Robert Bolt’s iconic work “A Man for all Seasons.” The story of Thomas More’s refusal to abandon his religious beliefs, even in the face of certain execution. More spoke those powerful words to his wife, when she had been granted a visit with him in his cell in the tower. It was to be their last visit. Sir Thomas More was later elevated to sainthood in the church.

What was the impetus, the catalyst for me writing about this dark subject at this time?

Well, I think it is due to knowing about, or hearing about, frequently it seems now, the passing of those who at one time or another have been a part of my life.

Also, I’m sure, after so many years on this journey through life, it is natural to contemplate one’s own leave taking. The natural order of things, I often say. Shadows.

Time for a subject change.

It was really a special occasion. I refer to the Chapin Foundation Lecture Hall Dedication held recently at Beaufort County Community College.

This event took place to acknowledge the very generous donation from the foundation, which is to “help students who wish to continue their dreams for a four-year degree . . .” Many were present to show their support and friendship.

Mary Alice and Howard Chapin were career educators, and he served nine consecutive productive terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Good people making a positive difference in the lives of others. Sunshine.
Peace.
