Jamie Perez was a really big part of the success that the Washington High School girls’ soccer team had last season.

The Pam Pack went 17-1-1 overall and reached the second round of the state playoffs before losing their first game. She scored 36 of her team’s 56 goals during the season, averaging an amazing 2.3 goals a game. She also had nine assists.

With all eyes on her again this season, she said she’s doing her part to help her teammates get more involved in the scoring. That was evident in Thursday’s 1-0 win over Faith Christian as sophomore Sonti Small scored a second-half goal that helped the Pam Pack to a win in its home opener.

We talked with her about that and several other things going on within the squad as it prepares to open Eastern Plains Conference play next week.

1. You played a big part in the team’s success last season. Tell me about that as far as going into this season and the adjustment period the team has had.

“It’s been interesting getting to see where everybody, all of our new players can play and what position fits them best. We are definitely finding our way on our feet again, coming back from last season. We did have to replace some people and some positions, which was a bit difficult, but we’re starting to get the hang of it.

So I think that’s a huge thing about communication and getting to know each other and how we work well together.”

2. At one point you had a freshman on one side of you and a sophomore on the other. What’s that like because you have six seniors on the team but you’re playing with a lot of young players, too.

“It is challenging to be able to talk to them, but once we get the hang of it, I feel like it would be great. I love being able to kind of teach them and guide them so that they don’t get so stressed out in certain situations. And I think that with every game that we’re doing better with that.”

3. Did the winter weather affect you guys as much as it did everybody else?

“It did. It was cold. We had to get used to that (Thursday night against Faith Christian).

“Yeah, we did have to put in some extra work. We did have to play some longer hours than we were used to because of the weather setbacks. But I feel like we were able to get our foot in.”

4. Talk about this win as compared to what you guys went through as far as D.H. Conley (an 8-0 loss earlier in the week). Conley was a humbling loss, but you come back and played much better against a pretty good Faith Christian team.

“I feel like we did have a lot of, we had a lot more confidence coming into this game because Conley really opened our eyes. And so I feel like it built up a lot more confidence after playing Conley. So I think that that was something that we needed.”

5. This isn’t the last non-conference game, but you go to conference play next against North Pitt next week. How does that mentality change?

I think that if we work well, if we work together as a team, it should go well. I feel like we have seen good competition. So I think that we should be ready for our conference games coming up.”
