I don’t think I ever told you this but one of my neighbors has two boys that I coached. Keith and Amy (Hardison) Roach have two sons that I coached. Back up a few sentences, I taught Amy, and she is the brains of the outfit! Keith was the High Sheriff of Martin Co. and he has gotten me out of many a driving ticket.
But the story goes on from there. They had two sons named Kevin and Brad and they played for me. The Roaches lived behind Bill Mac and Susan Alligood . Keith was also renowned for his basketball skills when he lived in my neighborhood. He thought the two boys would too. They played three sports in high school but the main sport they mastered was football.
One was 6’6” and the other was 6’7”. One went to ECU and the other went to Catawba. They played in every All-Star game that there was in NC. Kevin missed one because he was playing for a State Championship missing the Shrine Bowl his senior year, and went on to have an illustrious career at ECU.
At ‘6 7 “ Brad went on to shatter records at Catawba College! Back in high school his senior year, he played in the Shrine Bowl game because we played in the State Championship on the previous Saturday. He went even further after college and played for the Baltimore Ravens.
Both the sons were good players and good individuals. Kevin went on to be a CPA and Brad moved to Wilmington and works for the State. Both were better boys than their dad.
Both boys were polite and smart and good looking in spite of having their dad’s athletic abilities. Their mom is the athletic one in the family!
There were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places, Washington, NC. The Original Washington!
