At approximately 6:33 p.m. Wednesday (Mar. 12), Beaufort County Detention Center staff notified Beaufort County 911 of a fire within the jail facility.

First responders from Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Washington Police Department, Washington Fire-Rescue, Bunyan Fire Department, Chocowinity EMS and Beaufort County Emergency Services were dispatched. The Detention Center was evacuated and responding fire personnel quickly extinguished the fire.

All occupants were evaluated by EMS, and one inmate was transported for further medical evaluation.

The remaining Beaufort County detainees are being transported to an alternate facility for temporary housing. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
