Robert C. Smith

Robert Carol Smith, 97, a resident of Belhaven, N.C. passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 5th after a short illness.

Robert was born November 5, 1927 to David Samuel Smith Sr. and Victoria O’Bier Smith.

He is survived by his niece Ann Victoria Smith, nephew W Axson Smith Jr.   great nephew Axson Smith III, and great niece Kristen Sykes (Lee), great nephews Jason Smith, Christopher Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings W. Axson Smith Sr. (Melba), J. Perry Smith (Rita), Helen Gregory Smith, David Samuel Smith Jr., nephew Mark C. Smith, and niece Carol Smith.

In his early years, Robert was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. He graduated from John A Wilkinson in 1944 and later attended the University of North Carolina where he played basketball. After college, Robert worked as a copy editor with newspaper offices at the Richmond Times Dispatch, Raleigh News & Observer and various others.

Robert enjoyed Reading, Writing, Basketball, Tennis and walking several hours a day after his morning calisthenics.

A graveside service will be held at 11 am Friday, March 21st at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Belhaven.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. James Episcopal Church or The Salvation Army.
