Engravers World and Rutledge Mini Storage, owned by Kevin Rutledge, were named Small Business of the Year at the Washington Beaufort County Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards banquet in January, recognizing their impact on the local economy and commitment to community service.
Rutledge, whose businesses have been serving the area for three generations, was both surprised and honored by the recognition.
“I was truly surprised when I was named Small Business of the Year,” said Rutledge. “It is a tremendous honor to receive such a prestigious award, and it serves as a powerful motivator for our team. This recognition is a testament to the collective dedication and excellence of our team across both businesses, and it reinforces the positive contributions we’ve made to our community.”
Rutledge operates Rutledge Mini Storage, a family-owned business since 1978, and Engravers World, which he founded 15 years ago to provide screen printing, embroidery, engraving and promotional products. Over the years, he has expanded Engravers World to nine employees, while Rutledge Mini Storage has grown to three locations with two full-time employees.
“Kevin is always consistent, always caring, always looking for the better—not only for his business but also for his employees,” said Chris Respess, a Chamber representative during the award presentation.
Beyond running his businesses, Rutledge is committed to giving back. He regularly donates to Bridge Foster Ministry, supports local sports leagues and contributes to families in need, schools and cancer-focused nonprofits such as Daughters for Dads. His generosity and leadership have left a lasting impact on Beaufort County, making him a deserving recipient of this year’s award.
For local businesses like Athletic Edge Sports and Fitness, having Engravers World as a trusted supplier has made a meaningful difference.
“We have been using Engravers World for over ten years, and they have always been reliable, prompt with communication and deliver great-quality products in a timely manner,” said Jessica Kirk Woolard, Director of Operations at Athletic Edge. “Sourcing locally not only ensures great service, but it also supports another small business that truly cares about its customers.”
For Rutledge, the most rewarding aspect of his work has been seeing his businesses grow and providing meaningful opportunities for his employees.
“I have had the privilege of witnessing the personal development of our employees, seeing my own visions and ideas come to life, and having the opportunity to give back to the community that has supported and recommended us over the years,” said Rutledge.
His philosophy of investing in both employees and the community has been a key factor in his success. As a small business owner, he understands the challenges that come with growth—whether it’s staffing shortages, managing high volumes, or navigating unexpected setbacks—but believes those obstacles create opportunities for growth.
“Every small business faces challenges and obstacles along the way,” said Rutledge. “However, it’s important to remember that each success is paired with valuable lessons learned from setbacks. Seek advice when necessary, take responsibility for mistakes and use them as opportunities for growth.”
Rutledge sees community support as the backbone of small business success and emphasizes the importance of reciprocity—serving the same community that sustains his businesses.
“The continued support of our community, through local shopping and repeat orders, is what enables businesses like mine to thrive,” said Rutledge. “Providing quality products and services while actively contributing to the well-being of the community is at the heart of our vision.”
As he looks ahead, Rutledge encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to take bold steps in pursuit of their business goals.
“Don’t let fear hold you back—focus on the opportunities in front of you,” emphasized Rutledge. “Without taking risks, success will never come. Trust in yourself, your team and the community you serve, and the rest will fall into place.”
With a legacy of business excellence, leadership and community involvement, Kevin Rutledge and his team at Rutledge Mini Storage and Engravers World continue to make a lasting impact on Beaufort County.
