I have never seen twins like the pair I am going to talk about in this week’s article . They were smart. They’d look you in the face like you were dumb and the thing about it ,they were probably right. Betty and Jane Alligood, that is who I am talking about. Bubba and I didn’t know how smart they were until the first grade at John Small School.

Jane is the one that still lives in Washington . She lives in her mother’s home now. She grew up in a duplex beside Freddie Harwell on Ninth Street, across the street from the old high school.

Jane was the tomboy of the pair. She had two traits. She was smart, yes, and if you’re choosing up teams, she’d be the first one chosen! The second one was that she took up for Betty. I know how many fights she and I had, I don’t know how many she won over Betty. She is smart with a computer. She is in charge of the names and addresses of our class reunion. And she usually figures them out. How is she smart? I don’t know. I guess it runs in her DNA. She leads the class reunion committee without flaw.

Betty and Charles Harrington live in Chapel Hill . Betty retired from the high school administration at John Motley High School in Eden, NC and Charlie retired from MillerCoors, and he and Betty moved to Carrboro and became Tarheels . I don’t know why, both the twins worshiped Charlie Mike Smith, a Duke student , and they graduated
from Meredith .

Betty was the first to play kick the can from Big Walter’s truck after supper. Betty and Jane were so competitive that is why they are so smart! They’re competitive .

One time I had to call the high school where Betty worked and I used the term “ twin”. Once she answered the phone Betty told the person that any time you get a call and they use the word “twin”, you better call me, it’s an emergency. Jane refuses to admit that she recruited my high school and recruited a kid for Meredith.

They are both ladies through and through. Be careful what you get, they’re both pretty sharp. Twins should be. I’ve got a set of twins, and they are like Betty and Jane.

They were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best places , Washington, NC! The Original Washington!!
