Dr. Makepeace named first principal of Washington Elementary; Johnson promoted at CMS

Beaufort County Schools (BCS) is pleased to announce that Kelly Makepeace has been appointed as the new principal of Washington Elementary School effective July 1, 2025.

Dr. Makepeace is the current Principal at Chocowinity Middle School and brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success. Washington Elementary School is scheduled to open in August of 2026. During the 25-26 school year, Dr. Makepeace will be working to prepare for the opening of the new Washington Elementary School, including assembling personnel, student schedules, interior design of the building, as well as establishing processes and procedures necessary for the successful transition of students.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Cheeseman adds, “today marks an exciting new chapter not only for our principal but for the entire school community. With unwavering dedication, vision, and a deep commitment to the success of our students, Dr. Kelly Makepeace has demonstrated exceptional leadership. I am confident that her ability to inspire and foster a positive, growth-oriented environment will continue to thrive in this new opportunity, and I look forward to the future achievements she will lead us toward at Washington Elementary School.”

Dr. Makepeace holds a Ed.D in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University, a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University and is currently serving as a Certified Principal in her role at Chocowinity Middle School.

Assistant Principal Lauren Johnson will be replacing Dr. Makepeace as the new Principal of Chocowinity Middle School effective July 1, 2025.

Ms. Johnson is a graduate of East Carolina University earning her Master of Arts in Education. A native of Beaufort County, Ms. Johnson has been with Beaufort County Schools in the capacity of teacher, literacy specialist and Assistant Principal for over 15 years. She has served as Assistant Principal at Chocowinity Middle School since 2022 and succeeds Dr. Makepeace, who will be transitioning to Washington Elementary School. Ms. Johnson has built strong relationships with the students and families of Chocowinity Middle School and is committed to its continued success. According to Cheeseman, “Ms. Johnson has shown exceptional leadership at Chocowinity Middle School, and I know she is ready to guide CMS into the future. I have great confidence that she will continue to make a positive impact on students, staff, and families”
