Roundup: Fayetteville State women fall, P.S. Jones golf wins opener

Former Southside High School star KaNyah O’Neal and the Fayetteville State women’s basketball team lost in the first round of the NCAA Division II postseason.

The Broncos dropped a 60-50 decision against Gannon University last Friday in pod play, which was held in Edinboro, Pa., at Edinboro University.

The Broncos finished the season at 21-8 after shooting just 26% from the floor and only 5.6% from 3-point range. O’Neal finished with eight points and two rebounds.

O’Neal finished the season averaging 7.9 points and 2.8 rebounds.

P.S. Jones golf places 2nd

The P.S. Jones Middle School golf team opened its season with a second-place finish last week at Cypress Landing.

St. Peter’s won the meet with a score of 160, led by Cohen Hogan’s 48 over nine holes. P.S. Jones was second with a 164. The Demons were led by Larry Woolard’s 50, good enough for second place, and Dawson Raper, who was fourth with a 51.

Chocowinity’s lowest scorer was Brayden Howard, who shot a 53.

P.S. Jones was set to play in a tournament on March 19 at Washington Yacht & Country Club.

St. Patrick’s Day 5K, Pub Crawl crowns winners

Local runners took part in and were successful in the fourth annual St. Patrick’s Day 5K and Pub Crawl.

Dillon Britt of Pendleton won the overall race with a clock time of 19:53.54. Jordan Lancaster of Winterville was second in 19:58.45 while Manuel Meza of Washington was third at 20:12.01.

Other local runners who finished in the top 10 were Coby Alligood of Blounts Creek (4th, 20:12.69), Blake Wainwright of Bath (6th, 21:09.20) and Ryan Leggett of Washington (21:15.58).

Niederhauser wins age division at Croatan Buck Fifty

Galen Niederhauser won his age division in the Croatan Buck Fifty cycling event, held last Saturday in Swansboro.

The event was broken down into four different categories: The Twenty, The Fifty, The Buck and The Buck Fifty.

Niederhauser rode in the Fifty Open and finished in 2:25:15.3. He had an average pace of 19.8 mph.

Rod Cantrell participated in the Fifty 60+ division and finished fourth in 2:35:06.2. His pace speed was 18.5 mph.
