Football doesn’t have too many niche positions to it. But Nash Pippin has figured out how to use his talents to continue his football career playing one.
Pippin announced he will be a long snapper at Davidson College. Along with kicker and a couple of other positions, Pippin has a unique talent that will be greatly needed at the school. He said the Wildcats’ long snapper has graduated, meaning he has a chance to make the squad and an immediate impact.
“Nash found it very important to practice his craft and get better at his game and all those things,” former Washington coach Matt Taylor said. “And not being the most athletic, not being the most talented, but hard work persevered in this situation. And it’s awesome to see the good guys win.
“It’s awesome to see guys that do it the right way, that live the lifestyle that all coaches talk about, and him find a way to be successful. So it’s a really cool thing.”
We talked with Pippin about his college choice and what’s next for him after his announcement.
1. Tell me a little bit about the process that goes from point A to point B as far as college, trying to make a decision.
“So it was a hard decision, to be honest. I actually, my position, I’m a long snapper. So I wasn’t recruited until really late in the season after my senior season was over.
“In fact, I didn’t have a single offer. I picked up my first two offers in February. And my first one was probably January from NC Wesleyan. And then I got one from Barton and Davidson in February. And so I started going on visits, seeing which schools were best fit for me. And Davidson just felt like home when I got there.
“And obviously, it’s a division one school, it’s a beautiful campus. Very nice facility, high academics, which was big for me, really good academics. So that was probably the main couple of things that went into it.”
2. So it kinda had to be a little bit of a surprise for you because, like you said, it didn’t sound like you really had an idea about where you were gonna go, what you were gonna do. And then all of a sudden, you’ve got people knocking on your door.
Well, that was kind of the thing, cuz I was really like, to be honest, I thought my football days were over. I was planning on probably ending up going to NC State to be a student. And just came along and been blessed by the good man upstairs, just gave me an opportunity. So I’m very thankful.”
3. What did they tell you as far as what they expect from you from a football perspective?
Well, from a football program side, Davidson has had some good success in the last couple of years, so they’re coming off some good seasons. They just got a brand new football facility, actually, a new weight room, locker room, and a brand new stadium. So that’s very nice, top-of-the-line.
“But like I said, it felt like home. And the coaches were all great.
4. What’s the process for you now? I mean, you’re kind of out of football mode. You’re already doing college things and stuff like that, playing baseball. So how does this kind of fit into the equation of what you anticipate wanting to do, and I guess your goals and expectations for getting football ready coming into the fall?
Kind of how I’m trying to transition, I’m gonna go up there a couple of times, meet some of the upcoming freshmen that I’m gonna be in the same class as. They’re gonna be on the football team. They’re trying to introduce me to them, make some friends, possible roommates, that kind of thing.
“But as far as football goes, I’m snapping as much as I can. Snapping probably three or four times a week right now. Just to make sure I’m staying in the groove. Really focusing on the small things right now, trying to hit a specific target, hit the punter’s hip, put it right where he needs it to be. And work on the speed of my ball, just the little specific things that puts you at the next level.”
5. I’m sure you’re like all these other seniors, in a sense, that you’re already kind of in college mode with taking online classes, college prep courses and stuff like that. (You’ve got prom and graduation and spring sports season. So this obviously has to feel pretty good to kind of have this off your shoulders.
Yes, sir. It was definitely a stressful time trying to figure out where to go. It’s definitely a relief to be able to know where I’m going next year and be happy and excited about that. It’s just making everything a little more consistent and allowing me to stay more consistent with a schedule. And just trying to be more consistent. Long snap is all about consistency.”
