Roundup: Former Southside, Northside High School baseball star to play for High Point Rockers

Former Southside and Northside High School baseball star Brantley Cutler will continue his career with the High Point Rockers, a minor league team that plays in the Atlantic League.

Cutler tried out for and made the team after playing college baseball at Maryland-Eastern Shore. He is coming off a season where he earned MVP honors and helped his team to the NCAA Division II regional.

Cutler batted .317 with 46 hits, 30 RBIs, seven doubles, three triples and five home runs as a senior at Maryland-Eastern Shore. He batted .467 at the regional and earned All-Northeast Conference First Team honors. Cutler later was selected to play in the MLB HBCU All-Star game.

He was granted an additional season of play due to the coronavirus pandemic and earned a master’s degree in the process.

Washington first, Northside second at golf meet

Washington High School’s golf team finished first and Northside placed second in a four-team golf meet held last week at Washington Yacht & Country Club.

Oliver Thomas earned medalist honors with a round of 87. Cutler Lee was second overall for Washington with an 89. Landon Moore was third for Northside with a 92. Washington won with a 369 while Northside had 382, Mattamuskeet had a 469 and Columbia had a 497.

Other Washington golfers included: Gabe Neiderhauser, 95; Garrett Hudson, 98. Those who played but did not qualify in the final team score were: Walt Radliff, 100; Ayden Yates, 111; Sam Bilboro, 112; Ross Moore, 100; Miller Tyson, 98; Braeden Sadler, 109.

Other Northside golfers included: Tyler Radcliffe, 93; Lawson Goltra, 96; Jahquan Jones, 99. Those who played but did not qualify in the final team score were: Jay Battershell, 101; Dawson Rouse, 114; Bryce Askew, 109; Will Cooper, 107.

P.S. Jones places second of five teams

The P.S. Jones Middle School golf team placed second out of five teams during last week’s golf tournament at Washington Yacht & Country Club.

The Demons had a score of 166, just behind winner St. Peter’s, which had a 143. Cohen Hogan won medalist honors with a 47 over nine holes.

P.S. Jones’ Larry Woolard tied for second with St. Peter’s Barrett Fleming and Landon Turrone, who each had a score of 48. Dawson Raper and Gabby Smith also played in the foursome for the Demons.
