Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Across the street from the former high school, lived Ed and Mary Walker, right beside the Gerard’s. They moved there and Ed would park his GW Walker van on Telfair Street.

He played plenty of golf on his days off and of course his vacation days . He worked at G. W. Walker and Sons. Mary, his wife, was sister to Murray Hamilton.

Ed , also known as Rusty, was older than his brothers, Larry and Steve, who played a lot of tennis. They were very competitive. They were competitive in whiffle ball games, football, basketball and tennis matches. Larry Walker was probably the best athlete of all the three brothers.

They got that from the oldest brother Ed, who was competitive in tennis, and from their dad who was competitive in golf. They live in Washington still today but they do not live in the same neighborhood. Ed lives out of town now and is a former editor of the Washington Daily News.

Larry coached football at Washington HS with Brian Paschal. I am sorry to say that he retired from coaching. He should be coaching today as knowledgeable as he is.

I am sorry I haven’t written about them sooner because they were close friends with the Renns, Mike and Wayne. They lived in the neighborhood too.

They were the best of times with the best of friends and in the best of places, Washington, NC ! The Original Washington!
