Traffic stop leads to armed robbery arrest

On March 30 at 7:03 a.m., deputies with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Handy Mart located at 5385 River Road, Washington after receiving a 911 call reporting an armed robbery had just occurred.
According to a store employee, a black male entered the store wearing a mask covering his face while holding what was described as a rifle or shotgun. The employee told deputies the male subject stated he was robbing her and demanded the money from the cash register.
During the investigation detectives were able to identify a suspect vehicle and a short time later. Deputies with the Patrol Division located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop. As a result of information and evidence gathered during this stop, the driver was taken into custody without incident.
The driver is identified as 30-year-old Sonny Ray Cobb Jr. Cobb was charged with one count of Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and was placed in the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond. With the apprehension of the suspect, the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office doesn’t believe there is an ongoing threat to the community and is investigating this as an isolated incident.
