Boys and girls, parents and volunteers gathered Saturday morning at Susie Gray McConnell Athletic Complex in Washington to kick off the youth baseball and softball season.

Children from Washington, Bath, Belhaven and Chocowinity will participate in the Washington Youth Baseball League and the Washington Girls Softball League during the season. Before the start of play last Saturday, people gathered in a ceremony to mark the special day.

Members of the Washington High School JROTC were also present as Leah Clark sang the National Anthem. Corey Rogerson was among those who spoke before Austin Cherry, who is battling cancer, threw out the first pitch to Grayson Martin, whose father died recently of cancer.
