CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — Southside’s baseball team continues to battle hard but is struggling to catch a break here and there.

The Seahawks dropped a 10-4 decision to Coastal Plains Conference foe Pamlico County on Wednesday, wrapping up a 0-2 week with the Hurricanes. Southside dropped to 3-9 overall, 0-4 in the CPC.

In five games this season, the Seahawks have been within a couple of runs and a break or two here and there of picking up a victory. That includes close ones against Northside (lost 5-2 and 3-2), North East Carolina Prep (lost 2-1) and North Pitt (lost 5-3) earlier in the season.

That was the case again against Pamlico County. The Seahawks trailed 2-0 after the Hurricanes batted in the top of the first inning but got one run back. Southside added another run in the third to cut it to 5-2 but couldn’t push across an additional run or two to make things more interesting before Pamlico County pulled away.

“We just weren’t sharp all the way around,” Southside coach John Lohman said. “And when you make an error, give some momentum away, you walk a few people, hit a few batters, you gotta be sharp.

“You can’t be giving free stuff away. I think that’s what happened. And then you get tight and then they get a big hit and all of a sudden you’re down four or five runs, you just lose it.”

The Seahawks got some big momentum to end the top of the first inning after Pamlico County got two runs on an error. The relay throw from the outfield to catcher Taylor Ashley allowed him to easily tag out Pamlico County’s Brady Caccavaro at home plate to end the threat.

Southside got a run back in the bottom half of the inning. Ashley reached on an error in center field, stole third and scored when Braxton Cuthrell singled up the middle. However, Pamlico County got three runs in the second to extend its lead to 5-1.

The Seahawks got another run back in the third. Ashley, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a double, reached on a throwing error. He stole third and later scored on a wild pitch.

Pamlico County got two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put the game away. They finished with 13 hits off starting pitcher Luke Bullock (4.2 innings, 7 hits, 4 earned runs, six walks, five strikeouts) and reliever Austin Gerard (2.1 innings, six hits, 3 earned runs, walk, strikeout).

Yeah, we got one back right away and I thought, ‘OK, well, maybe it’s not the end of the world,’ and then, just weren’t sharp in that second inning from there. I think it was just we gave up too many free bases and then a few hits.

And then again, we hit the ball, we put the bat on the ball, which is good because we’ve been struggling with doing that in general. But again, we had a bases-loaded, no-out situation, don’t get anything out of it.”
