Mohamed and Reem Darar, owners of The Mulberry House in Washington are selling the restaurant, coffee bar and rooftop lounge with the hopes of keeping it open.

The Darars will maintain involvement with The Mulberry House. They want to work with whomever the new owners will be to improve customers’ experience at the restaurant.

“We are going to keep this business open. We’ve invested a lot of energy and a lot of time and a lot of money in that business,” Mohamed said. They hope Mulberry House will be open for the next century.

The Darars are being “selective” about who will take ownership of The Mulberry House, Mohamed said. To keep “bearing the torch,” to keep the restaurant “strong.” He and Reem would like to see another couple purchase it who possess a wealth of experience in the restaurant industry.

The Mulberry House is located in the historic Fowle building on the corner of West Main and North Respess Streets. The restaurant will continue to reside on the first floor and rooftop; however, the second and third floors will be transformed into a boutique hotel with 16 rooms, the Darars said.

The Darars are selling The Mulberry House so they can focus on the boutique hotel. As of publication, an opening date for the hotel has not been set.

The Darars are real estate developers who opened The Mulberry House in 2021. Mohamed said being a developer means looking ahead to future projects. The Mulberry House, he said, is in a “healthy” position to where he can now focus on the boutique hotel.

“Numbers are good. Everything is healthy. Now is the time for us to change…to develop again,” Mohammed said.

The Mulberry House is being sold by Kimberly Ramsey with TransWorld Business Advisors in Greenville; it is listed at $550,000.
