=====
Fans of high school baseball and softball will get the chance to enjoy lots of both sports at Northside High School starting Friday.
The programs will offer two tournaments that will feature local and non-local teams in action. The baseball tournament goes over two days, Friday and Saturday, while the softball tournament will be played Friday, Saturday and Monday.
Pungo Christian Academy, Lawrence Academy and TEACH School will join the Panthers in the baseball tournament. Play begins Friday with Northside and PCA at 1 p.m.
“It’s going to be a big two days of baseball and then three days of softball,” Northside baseball coach Parker Boyd said. “We’re going to have some really good baseball and softball teams there. I’m actually excited just to watch some softball without having to coach anything.”
The softball tournament consists of 1A powers Perquimans, Bear Grass Charter and Pamlico County along with 2A stalwarts Washington and Camden County. East Wilkes, which beat Northside last season to win the Class 1A state title, will be there along with Class 4A Richmond County.
“Well, that’s another big drawing thing was the level of competition,” Northside softball coach Keith Boyd said about the field. “I mean, you’ve got 1A schools like Pamlico and Perquimans and Bear Grass Charter. They are all in the top 10 in the East in 1A. East Wilkes coming from the western part of state, who we played those guys in the state championship last year, and they’re in the top five in the west. Not to mention how good Washington is in 2A, and Camden’s a good 2A school, and Richmond County is a 4A school.
“So the coaches were excited about it because Easter is so late that when we come back off Easter break, there’s only a week of the season left.
Before the start of the baseball tournament, Parker Boyd said a special ceremony will be held to recognize members of the 1994 team that won the Class 2A baseball title over C.D. Owen High School.
Bryan Keith Woolard was the catcher on the 1994 team. He was killed in an automobile crash in 2009. A scholarship to a Northside senior has been given out by the family since his death. The last scholarship was given last season.
“The family has been so good to the players for so long,” Parker Boyd said. “They’re offering that scholarship to the senior baseball players. We just figured this was the least we could do to show our appreciation for them for what they’ve been doing for our kids for 20-plus years.”
Parker Boyd said the focus of his team was to get more seasoning in for the postseason. The Panthers have had an up-and-down season but are currently the No. 2 team in 1A from the conference. East Carteret will get the 2A seed and could be a top seed since the Mariners are currently unbeaten. Pamlico County is the top 1A seed so far in the CPC.
“Basically, I’m looking at this as an opportunity to maybe get us a better seed in the playoff if we play well and just grow up a little bit,” Parker Boyd said. “That’s what the whole year has been, just growing up. Maybe the extra three games will get us three more games mature, ready for the playoff.”
Keith Boyd said a lot of hands have gone into each tournament, from Booster Club President Jerry Wynne to Kim Braddy and Northside Principal Tracy Nixon.
“We’ve had a lot of hands in this, and of course, when you’ve got 14 teams, you combine softball with baseball, it’s going to take a lot of hands,” Keith Boyd said. “Good Lord is going to bless us, it looks like good weather.
“I hope a lot of people come out because you’re going to see a lot of good softball and baseball.”
