Pinetown Fire Department released a statement on an active investigation into its finances by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
The statement, published to social media on Friday, April 11 reads, “Pinetown Rescue & EMS and Pinetown Fire Department have been made aware of recent irregularities with our banking accounts. We have taken the appropriate actions to secure all our accounts and financial assets,”
“As public safety agencies, we value the trust that our community places in our departments, and we are working with the necessary authorities to investigate these recent findings.”
On Thursday, April 10, the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) confirmed that an investigation was initiated involving Pinetown Volunteer Fireman’s Association and Pinetown Rescue Squad and EMS. The bureau is investigating possible embezzlement of Pinetown Fire Department funds. A request for an investigation was sent to the bureau from District Attorney Tom Anglim’s office.
The Daily News contacted SBI on Tuesday morning (April 15) to ask if charges have been filed. A spokesperson for SBI stated, “There is no change in status. The case is still under investigation and active at this time.”
