It was a special day on Monday for many reasons.
Over 100 athletes from across Beaufort and Hyde counties participated in the annual Special Olympics held at Washington High School. Awards were handed out to athletes who took part in shot put, javelin, softball toss, kicking, running and other events.
Students and teachers from the public schools and others, like Washington Montessori and Beaufort County Community College, served as volunteers. After the opening ceremonies, they assisted in running the games, helping athletes where needed and offering support everywhere.
Athletes spent the day participating in the events and getting awards for placing among the leaders in events. Lunch was served after the games.
