Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Remembering back over the holidays, Easter Monday in Jamesville was always a festival day. Complete with a doubleheader baseball game between the towns of Williamston and Jamesville. Everyone would ride the rides and enjoy the fresh herring caught out of the Roanoke River and cooked on its banks.

I thought I had the best herring I could eat at the Herring Club on Tranters Creek, until I ate at Rivers Edge Restaurant beside Cypress Grill, which burned down years ago . They were fresh out of the Roanoke River and the people went down there for those herring. These fish were right out of the water and cooked the way they were supposed to be. With all the sides, fresh potatoes, cornbread and string beans and dessert.

We won the baseball games and after a while Richie Ange started taking it out on those Tigers! They are no longer around but you can still get em at the The Rivers Edge Restaurant!

If you get a chance, take a trip to Jamesville . Take 171 until you get to Margaret Street and watch the hill ,and be careful until you get to the river because it will sneak up on you. Go for the bands and the entertainment because there is no school down there any more as they have consolidated with my school, Williamston H. S. now called Martin H.S. Go because you haven’t got anything to do, it’ll be some of the best and freshest food you’ve ever tasted.

Rose Ann used to claim Easter Sunday was the beginning of summer months. We would take our shoes off and go barefooted but you better be careful about the bees!!

They were the best of times with the best friends and in the best places, Washington, N. C. The Original Washington!
