A project to improve and widen a boardwalk along the waterfront in downtown Washington is complete, the City of Washington announced via social media on Thursday, April 17.

The boardwalk, spanning an estimated 1,980 ft., was divided into three phases that started on the east end by the Moss Landing housing development and ended by the North Carolina Estuarium. The project began in 2021.

Four years ago a project to reconstruct the boardwalk began due to the age of the previous structure and safety issues, City Manager Jonathan Russell said in 2021, per a 2021 article from the Daily News.

Today, the boardwalk has new framing, flooring and has been widened by approximately ten inches.

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management provided $350,000 in a grant to the city for boardwalk reconstruction. The remaining balance – $251,500 – was paid for by the City of Washington.
