Should I ever be asked what was my favorite quotation, from any of the myriad sources that were available, what would be my pick?
Well, now. I’m not going to be asked such a question, of course. Plus, I would really have an almost impossible time in naming any one specific set of words.
Like music, there are certain genres that “connect” in one’s life, depending upon any number of factors. Many factors.
Having said all of this, rather awkwardly, I’ll boldly attempt to answer the unasked question that this column posed at the beginning.
My choice of powerful, poignant, profound and eloquent words would come from “ The Book of Common Prayer” pages 594-95.
“O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.
“Then in thy mercy grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last. Amen.”
Friends, I don’t see how any sentiments could be expressed, written, any better than those fifty-three words.
No, not by old Will Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, Robert Frost, George Bernard Shaw, et al. I mean, not by a whole bunch of “et als.”
I need to wrap up this endeavor. To attempt to lengthen it with a lot of my own “unworthy words” would simply be a case of superfluity.
For those of you who stayed with me here to the end, thanks.
May we all come to know “ peace at the last.”
May it be so.
