Cornelius Theodore “Neal” Partrick, Sr.

Cornelius Theodore “Neal” Partrick, Sr. passed away on the 18th of April, 2025. He was born in Clinton, N.C. on March 14, 1929 to Lucy Nolan Partrick and Edward Dudley Partrick, Sr. His family, including his five siblings, moved to Wilmington, N.C. in the 1930’s and he grew up on Summer Rest Road, off of Wrightsville Sound and the Inland Waterway. In his own words, he was “all over the place” on the Sound and around Wrightsville Beach.  As a teenager, he and a friend owned and captained a shrimp boat for a time.  He graduated from New Hanover High School in 1947.

Neal graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1950. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a member of The Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and the German Club. He graduated from the UNC-Chapel Hill Medical School in 1954.  He was a Morehead Scholar.  He completed his internship at Boston City Hospital from 1954-1956.  He was a Captain in the U.S. Army at Fort McPherson in Atlanta from 1956-1958. Neal finished his residency at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1958-1960 and was Chief Resident his last year.  He and his family moved to Washington, N.C. in June of 1960.  He joined Dr. Clark Rodman and practiced Internal Medicine under Rodman & Partrick. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Henry L. Stephenson, Jr. joined the practice under Rodman, Partrick & Stephenson. They were known as “the three wise men” by a generation of medical students from UNC-Chapel Hill whom they mentored.  Many other gifted doctors and nurses joined the practice over the years.  The practice later became known as Pamlico Internal Medicine and it continues to thrive today under ECU Health Internal Medicine.

Neal is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mary Elizabeth Allsbrook Partrick, his son, Cornelius Theodore Partrick, Jr., (and wife, Catherine Stuart Partrick), his daughter Martha Elizabeth Partrick (and partner, Patrick Joseph Campbell), and his son Warren Allsbrook Partrick.  Neal’s grandchildren are Cornelius Theodore Partrick, III (and wife, Amy Lauren Partrick and great grandson, Theodore “Teddy” Alexander Partrick) and Cynthia Stuart Partrick Trebour (and husband, Kyle Mallett Trebour, and a great granddaughter due in June).  He is also survived by his brother, Jeremiah Nolan Partrick, Sr. (and wife, Joan Gallagher Partrick), and many nieces and nephews.

Apart from his family and his medical profession, Neal loved fishing, hunting, reading and travel.  He was especially fond of the Pamlico River.  It is doubtful that he left any part of it unexplored or un-fished!

A service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington, N.C. on the 4th of May, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. A reception will follow in All Saints’ Hall.
