I went to see my grand kids compete in tennis and lacrosse this past week. They play for Stephen Decatur High School in Ocean City, Maryland. They played their hearts out and I think it’s because I was there.
Geren is my oldest grandson, he plays tennis on the varsity team and his younger brother, Drew, plays on the JV team. I stayed with my daughter Hope while they played tennis. They won over Princess Anne HS and lost the JV match. It didn’t end till 7 p. m. We went to get something to eat and the boys were starving.
The next day I went to see lacrosse with my granddaughter, Emory. Her older brother, Paxton, plays lacrosse as does she. Paxton’s team defeated the same team that Emory got beat by earlier. That team was Julius Caesar H.S. It was a two hour drive back to Ocean City but I would not have missed it for the world .
I had to leave the next day at 9 a.m to head to Edenton where Tracey picked me up.
I’m so glad I was able to go and enjoy this with them! I have been waiting for this for years. I got to see them compete for Stephen Decatur HS. I guess that’s the coach in me. You see, athletes who play for their high school teams feel better about their school than those who do not. Whether band or drama or any sport, those who do not care about their school generally care about nothing. My grandkids care about Stephen Decatur H. S. Even if it’s in Ocean City, Maryland!
They were the best of times with the best of friends in the best of places, Washington, N.C. The original Washington!
