Beaufort County Schools has canceled two previously scheduled forums on the tentative closing of S. W. Snowden Elementary, a spokesperson for the school district shared on Monday, April 28.
The forums were scheduled for Tuesday, April 29 at Chocowinity Primary School and Monday, May 5 at Chocowinity Middle School. A special called Board of Education meeting that would serve as a formal hearing on the school’s possible closing was postponed. It was initially scheduled for Thursday, May 1, but a new date is forthcoming, the spokesperson wrote in an email.
“The Board recognizes Beaufort County commissioner statements made at the April 17, 2025, SWS forum regarding potential county funding to maintain the community school in Aurora for school year 2025-2026. Therefore, the Board will wait to host forums and/or public hearings related to SWS until the county manager presents the recommended 2025-2026 budget to the county commissioners on or around May 12, 2025,” the spokesperson explained.
The Daily News sent follow-up questions to the school district about what this announcement could mean for Snowden and is awaiting a response.
