A full day of activities is in the works on Saturday, May 3, for the Blounts Creek Community Festival and Parade. “We normally have an Easter Parade, but time simply got away from us this year,” said Phyllis Moore-Johnson, president of the Ware Creek Rosenwald School Community Center. “So we decided to have an event where we could celebrate Easter, May Day, and Cinco De Mayo.”
The event kicks off with a parade at noon, starting at the Cox’s Crossroads in Blounts Creek, and making its way to the Ware Creek Missionary Baptist Church on Mauls Point Road. Following the parade, everyone is invited to join an afternoon of festivities at the Ware Creek Rosenwald School Community Center located at 2144 Mauls Point Road. There will be games and recreation activities for the kids and adults, music, raffles, and a delectable spread of food and refreshments throughout the event, including hot fish or fried chicken sandwich combos, hot dog combos, popcorn, and desserts. “It is going to be a great fellowship event,” said Johnson. “Not just for our community, but all communities.”
All proceeds from the event will go towards the Rosenwald School Community Center. “We were finally able to get internet access, but there are monthly bills that need to be paid. We are also hoping to purchase some laptop computers so we can make it a true communications center. We have also started hosting monthly events, which include movies, game nights, and other special events such as Juneteenth.”
Built in 1921, the Ware Creek Rosenwald School was one of the six Rosenwald Schools in Beaufort County. It was part of the vision of Julius Rosenwald, Philanthropist and president of Sears and Roebuck, and Booker T. Washington of the Tuskegee Institute. Hailed as one of the most important initiatives to advance black education, the schools were built specifically for African American children in the South.
