CHOCOWINITY, N.C. — This week will be a long one for Southside’s softball team.

After Monday’s 15-2 win over Lejeune, the Seahawks continued the last week of the Coastal Plains Conference regular season at East Carteret on Tuesday and at home against the Mariners on Thursday.

Getting that opening-game win of the week certainly helps things after being off the previous week with the Easter break. The Seahawks (9-8, 3-5 CPC) are on the outside looking in for a spot in the Class 1A state playoffs, which will be announced next Monday. In the meantime, Southside is doing its part to make sure it stays in contention.

Yes, that’s what I told them that we played well for not playing a game in over a week,” Southside coach Kam Rouse said. “I mean, it was a good performance, and it’s a good showing. We are looking forward to East Carteret (Tuesday). Hopefully, we can continue, you know, Carolina (Crisp) with great pitching and the bats can stay hot, hopefully.”

The Seahawks got off to a good start with a three-run first inning on offense. On defense, Crisp struck out the first eight batters she faced, finishing with 10 strikeouts overall. The junior gave up two runs, none of them earned, with a walk and two hits.

Just working on throwing strikes, really, disrupting timing, changing speeds, stuff like that,” Crisp said.

Crisp and freshman Layla Hombirg each had two hits for the Seahawks. Crisp scored twice and drove in two runs to help her cause. Hombirg was even bigger at the plate. She hit a grand slam during a 10-run fourth inning where the Seahawks sent 15 batters to the plate. Her blast sailed to the left-field fence and gave Southside a 9-2 lead.

Just still trying to focus on making contact,” Hombirg said. “Because the first time I went up to bat, I was, I mean, obviously I love to have a home run.”

Hombirg came up later in the fourth and ripped another shot to left that drove in a run to extend the lead to the final margin. The game was called after Lejeune went down in order in the fifth inning.

I just really focus on making contact and not trying to kill the ball,” Hombirg said. “And just adjusting to her. Switching up pitchers is difficult. So, just adjusting to her and then just fixing what I feel needs to be fixed.”

Rouse hopes the success the team had on Monday will continue through the rest of the week.

Yeah, and that’s what I told them,” Rouse said. “That’s one of the things that I’ve been preaching to them this year. We’re gonna be aggressive.”
