Beaufort County Schools recognized the top athletes from March.

Those recognized included Malachi Moore and Sophie Berry of Northside, Austin Gerard and Lily McLean of Southside and Jackson Harding and Sonti Small of Washington.

Below is information that was read during the board of education meeting to recognize each athlete.

Northside

Female Athlete of the Month is sophomore Sophie Berry

Sophie displayed exceptional skill and talent as well as remarkable sportsmanship, leadership, and dedication to the Northside Lady Panthers Basketball team. Sophie had over 90 steals this season, made crucial shots in key games, dished out assists, and defended some of the best ladies in the conference.  Sophie has also shown incredible growth, effort, and resilience throughout the season, always pushing her teammates to get better while keeping the team’s spirit high.  She never gives up and is an absolute team player all the time. We are proud of you Sophie and can’t wait to see what next season holds.

Male Athlete of the Month is junior Malachi Moore

Malachi Moore is an exemplary student-athlete, known for his dedication and work ethic. Actively participating in football and basketball, he demonstrates a remarkable commitment to both his athletic and academic pursuits. Recently, Malachi achieved a career-high performance by scoring his 1,000th point in the 1st Round of the NCHSAA playoffs vs North Duplin. His continuous growth in the classroom is equally impressive, as he sets and reaches new goals in academics. With his strong work ethic and focus, Malachi is poised for a bright future, not only in athletics but also in his academic endeavors at Northside High School.

Southside

Female Athlete of the Month is senior Lily McLean

Lily is a three-sport athlete playing volleyball, basketball and softball. Lily’s efforts and play were a huge part in the girls’ basketball team making the playoffs. In softball, she has hit the ground running. Despite limited practice time bc of the basketball playoffs, Lily has started the softball season by leading the team with seven hits, including a triple and a grand slam in the first two games. Lily leads by example and makes everyone around her better. To go along with being a great athlete, Lily is an excellent student as well. She currently has a GPA of 3.5. and has recently signed to play softball for the Mid-Atlantic Christian University Mustangs next year.

Male Athlete of the Month is senior Austin Gerard

Austin is the only senior on the team this year. His steady demeanor and play at first base are a source of calm control and leadership. He has also done a great job stepping in to do some relief pitching. His biggest area of improvement so far has been his batting. We are looking forward to more great things from Austin in his final season at SHS.

Washington

Female Athlete of the Month is sophomore Sonti Small

Sonti demonstrates what a model student athlete should be on and off the field. As a soccer player, Sonti is always ready to play in whatever position she needs for the benefit of the team. As a defender, she reads her fellow players, as well as, the other team to move into the position she needs and often saves the day in doing so. As an offensive player, Sonti will surprise the opposing team with her speed and movement on the field to put the ball in the back of the net.  Sonti is polite and shows good sportsmanship but is competitive and strives to push her and her teammates to win.

Male Athlete of the Month is junior Jackson Harding

Jackson has been a standout in the early part of the season for the varsity baseball team. Jackson has lead the team in multiple hitting categories such as batting average, hits, runs batted in (RBI), home runs, on base percentage, and slugging. Jackson has worked extremely hard this off season coming back from a knee injury he sustained during football season, and we are excited to see him flourish and hope to continue to see his hard work pay off.
