Washington High School athletics is seeing improvement in many areas this season.

From flag football to boys’ basketball, boys’ soccer, swimming and softball, teams and individuals have found success in many areas. There’s also certain improvement coming with a new football coach, focus on weight training and improvements to the baseball field’s backstop.

We spoke with Pam Pack Athletics Director Will Tyson, who is also the baseball coach, about what worked and what’s in store for the school, its teams and athletes.

So I know the season is still a few weeks left before it wraps up. Tell me what you liked about the season. What was positive about athletes and the season?

Well, I would say one of the benefits, the many pluses that we saw this year, was we saw a lot of growth in all of our athletics across the board. All of our teams from top to bottom were very competitive across conference play, even into several teams making the playoffs that haven’t made the playoffs in several years. So it was good to see the growth of our athletics come back.

So yeah, I mean, it was good. I mean, all across the board, from top to bottom, it was a very, very good year for athletics here at Washington.”

What would you like to have seen done better? Or what do you feel like you’ll focus on to get better?

“Well, I think one of the biggest things that we’re trying to do here for the student athletes is we’re definitely trying to grow our weight room and allow our students to get stronger. I like our new football coaches made that a priority, definitely for like the football team and the track team, and I’m starting to implement it for baseball and other programs as we’re going to dedicate next year in this next off-season to really try to grow the strength of our kids.”

One of the capital projects involves baseball. Can you talk a little bit more about that and just what some of the things are that you’ll be doing?

“Well, facilities-wise, we’re attempting to put in a new backstop for the baseball team, we’ve been funding that project now for two years, and we think we’re at a point now where we’re ready to start construction this summer. And that will allow us to have a brick wall backstop and a net system instead of a chain link fence. Other capital projects that we’re looking at, starting to tackle, are a sound system for the soccer field, new sound system for the basketball court.

“Other little mini projects, not really capital projects that we’re looking at doing, are just making some upgrades to the soccer facility for the bench area and the seating area for the fans, trying to do some upgrades there. But one of the big upgrades that we’re trying to do is we’re trying to get our football field straight so that the turf is much more manageable and will look a little bit cleaner this year. That’s a big project that we’re undertaking, trying to get all that stuff looking up to par.”

And I know summertime is usually a team-building time and such. You’ve got camps and things like that that are going on. What’s the summer looking like as far as the athletics there?

Well, I mean, of course, football will be doing their normal seven-on-sevens. They’ll be doing summer conditioning, things of that nature. Volleyball will be doing its summer conditioning. Men’s soccer will do its summer conditioning.

“Camp-wise, I know, of course, I’ll be running my baseball camp for the youth to come in, have a little summer, week-long experience here. I don’t know of anybody off the top of my head that’s doing another camp.”

As far as that and the new conference and such, what are your thoughts about that?

Yeah, so I mean, the good thing is the new conference, we’re already rocking and rolling. We’ve already met a couple of times, and we’ve already got the fall and most of our winter schedules already built out. We’re working on the spring one right now as we speak.”
