Our office is currently monitoring the an increased risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening. This system could produce heavy rainfall, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and dangerous marine conditions.  The current forecast for Beaufort County includes:

Rain

  • Rain chances will increase today and continue through tonight.
  • Our heaviest rains are currently expected to occur between 2pm and 8pm this evening.

Severe Storms

  • Possible Severe thunderstorms could affect the County starting this afternoon, with the peak of the storms from 4pm to 8pm this evening. Strong wind gusts (up to 50 mph), and isolated large hail (quarter size), not to rule out isolated tornados are possible.

What To Watch For

  • Again, there are a lot of factors playing into the forecast of this approaching system and many of the details remain unclear. We encourage everyone to pay particular attention to the following potential:

o   Increasing Wind Gust Values – The latest forecast trends suggest that wind gusts could increase for our area with the severe weather potential, with some models referencing gusts ranging between 30 and 50 mph from this afternoon to this evening.

o   Severe Storm Warning- Includes periods of heavy rain, and isolated large hail (quarter size), and isolated tornados possible.

Please see the email below and attached briefing from the National Weather Service (NWS) for additional information.

From National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City:

Attached is the first briefing for the potential severe weather event this afternoon into this evening. The main hazards will be damaging wind gusts (60+ mph) and large hail, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. While severe weather will be possible across all of eastern NC, the best chances will be areas west of Highway 17 and north of Highway 70.
