Roundup: Northside, Washington softball advance, Pam Pack baseball drop close one

Northside and Washington’s softball teams advanced to the second round of the state playoffs during play on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Washington baseball team came close to pulling off the upset on the road. Northside had its game moved to Wednesday at 4 p.m. due to the weather.

Also of note, Washington and Pungo Christian soccer each won their games on Tuesday.

Northside tops Pender

Northside coach Keith Boyd said his team played one of its best games in beating Pender County, 13-2. Northside scored eight runs in the first three innings then put it away with a five-run sixth.

The Panthers (13-10) will travel to Roxboro Community for a game on Friday.

Northside had 12 hits while pitcher Allie Davis gave up six hits and struck out three. Megan Hopkins singled in Kinsey White, who also singled, to give Northside a 1-0 lead. Riley Hudson grounded into a fielder’s choice that plated EllaKate Hanna (bunt single) and Sophie Berry (error) drove in Hopkins to make it 3-0.

Hudson had a two-run single in the third that scored Alyssa Humphreys (error) and Kinsey White (double) to extend the lead to 8-1.

It was White’s double in the sixth that drove in the final two runs and led to the 10-run rule.

Washington 9, Louisburg 0

The Pam Pack also jumped to a big lead, scoring three runs in the first inning and two in the second to eventually put it away.

Washington (17-6) will play at South Granville on Friday in the second round.

Washington had one of its best offensive days of the season, banging out 15 hits. Senior pitcher Emma Orr was 3-for-4 wth one of the Pack’s three doubles. She was also stellar on the mound, giving up just two hits with a whopping 16 strikeouts and just two walks.

Carly Woolard (2-for-5, 2 runs, 2B), Alani Hyatt (2-for-4, 2 runs), Samantha Ward (2-for-4, RBI), Emma Harris (2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI) and Honor Edwards (2-for-3, RBI) led the Pack at the plate.

Whiteville 6, Washington 5

Washington broke open for a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to nearly pull off the upset of No. 3 Whiteville.

Whiteville got a run in the first, three in the second, one in the third and another in the fourth for a 6-0 lead.

Whiteville improved to 17-4 with the win. Washington’s season ended at 7-13.

Northside plays Wednesday

Northside’s baseball game with Falla Lake was moved to Wednesday at.4 p.m. Wet weather on Sunday and Monday, including hail at times on Monday, made the field unplayable on Tuesday, Northside coach Parker Boyd said.

Washington soccer wins EPC title

Washington’s soccer team rolled to a 6-0 win on Tuesday at Farmville Central to wrap up the Eastern Plains Conference title.

The Pam Pack (13-2-1, 9-0-1) scored three times in each half. Elizabeth Barrera Meza netted two goals while Avery Thomas, Genesis Hernandez, Caroline Mitchell and Angelee Higurera Dominquez each scored a goal. Naomi Huss and Mitchell also had assists.

Eileen Escalona and Addison Gibbs each recorded a save in goal. Washington has won nine straight and tied North Pitt, 0-0, since a 5-0 loss to Richlands on March 18.

The NC High School Athletic Association will announce the state playoff brackets on Friday, with the first round slated for Monday.

PCA tops Ridgecroft in first round

Pungo Christian Academy’s girls’ soccer team scored a first-half goal and made it stick in a 1-0 win over Ridgecroft in Tuesday’s first round of the Class 1A NC Independent Schools Athletic Association state playoffs.

Lexy Tate scored the goal to help the Raiders (7-5-1) move on to the second round of the state playoffs. Georgia Waters recorded six saves for PCA.

PCA will face The Oakwood School (6-7-1) on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Greenville.

Pungo baseball, softball

Pungo’s baseball team (12-8) hosts Ridgecroft at 4 p.m. in the second round of the state playoffs. The Raiders dropped an 11-4 decision to Ridgecroft in the Tarheel Independent Conference tournament semifinals last week.

The Pungo softball team (6-11) opens state playoff play at Ridgecroft on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Raiders beat Ridgecroft, 21-10, in the Tarheel Independent Conference tournament semifinals last week.
