Class 2A golf finishes first day at states, 1A suspended on Monday

PINEHURST, N.C. — The bad weather that impacted a lot of the state on Monday and Tuesday was doing the same at the NC High School Athletic Association state golf championships in the Pinehurst area.

Play was halted on Monday during the Class 1A finals in Southern Pines. Nine groups did not get started on the first day of the two-day event, while most of the other groups didn’t get nine holes in. Play was scheduled to resume Tuesday at 9 a.m., weather permitting.

In the Class 2A state finals, play was completed in the first round. Pine Lake Preparatory was first with a 316, with Bandys second at 321. Washington was last among the 12 teams to qualify with a 396.

The best finisher in the first round from Washington was senior Oliver Thomas, who shot a 96. After that was junior Gabe Niederhauser with a 97, junior Garrett Hudson with a 101, freshman Cutler Lee with a 102 and senior Ayden Yates with a 112.
