The bad weather and tough competition from other parts of the state made for a complex two days of golf for Northside and Washington at the state championships.
Northside finished 11th out of 12 teams at the Class 1A state championships, played at Longleaf Golf and Family Club in Southern Pines. The tournament was held to one round due to the heavy rains and storms in the area.
Washington got both of its rounds in during the Class 2A state championship, played at Pinehurst No. 6 in Pinehurst. However, the Pam Pack placed 12th with a 755 team score. Salisbury won the event with a 627.
The Pam Pack did bounce back after a rough day, shooting a team score of 359 on the second day. Washington had a 396 on the first day.
Washington’s highest finisher was junior Gabe Niederhauser (82nd, 185) followed by senior Oliver Thomas (84th, 186), freshman Cutler Lee (87th, 191), junior Garrett Hudson (89th, 193 and senior Ayden Yates (94th, 207).
Northside was among the teams that did not finish the first round on Monday due to the weather. The tournament was held to one round and completed on Tuesday.
The Panthers had a score of 353, which was nine shots better than Perquimans at 362. At last week’s East Regional, Northside finished behind Lejeune and Perquimans. Lejeune was 10th at the state final.
East Wake Academy was the only other school east of Raleigh to finish near the top, placing third with a team score of 325. Mount Airy won the event with a 320 followed by Christ the King with a 322.
Northside’s golfers were sophomore Landon Moore (43rd, 85), sophomore Lawson Goltra (43rd, 85), freshman Tyler Radcliffe (63rd, 89), sophomore Jay Battershell (79th, 94) and senior Max Vansant (79th, 94).
