Preparation work for the replacement of the small bridge that crosses Chocowinity Creek on NC 33 between Gray Road and Old Blounts Creek Road has begun. “The work involves the moving of utilities along that corridor and some widening in the area in advance of the bridge replacement,” said Heather Lane, division project development engineer, Division of Highways, Division 2, with North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). “The new bridge will be wider, which is the reason for the preliminary work.”

Lane said NCDOT won’t begin advertising and taking bids for the actual replacement of the bridge until June of 2026. If all goes as planned, she expects construction to start by the fall/winter of 2026. During construction, an on-site detour will be in place to manage traffic, which will remain on NC 33.
