Beaufort County Schools School Nutrition department was awarded $20,500 for its upcoming Summer Meal Program.

The grant was awarded by No Kids Hungry which is a nonprofit organization that works to solve hunger and poverty in the United States and around the world.

The grant will allow School Nutrition to rent an extra vehicle, purchase appropriate containers for  packing food, marketing, advertising and extra canopies, according to Director of School Nutrition for Beaufort County Schools Joanne Kirven shared.

Every summer, the school system provides free meals to students under the age of 18. Last year, Beaufort County Schools’ School Nutrition served 38,500 meals over an eight-week period, Kirven said.

This year, the program will begin on June 16 and go through August 14. Meals will be available Monday through Thursday; however, the program will not operate the week of July 4.
